Traditional
Navajo houses in Monument Valley
The
circular house on the left is the Woman's house. The more angular
house on the right is the Men's house. Both types of houses
are important locations for rituals of the Navajo religion.
Their shapes are also important for the rituals. The houses
have a wood pole frame and are covered by dirt to add insulation.
The thick layers of dirt help keep the insides cool during the
summer and warm during the winter.
The
wood structure in the middle is a horse stall.
